GUE Tech Training Adventure | Cayman Islands Dive with Pat Nolan & Alex Cena

Exploring the Edge: A Deep Dive into GUE Tech 1 Training

Im in a prone position frog kicking across a a coral reef. It’s daylight, but we still carry power lights for communication purposes. I do not need to look back to know where my teammate is and how’s he’s doing.

There’s something transformative about plunging into the silent blue—where discipline meets wonder, and where each breath is part of a carefully calculated plan. Join Pat Nolan and Alex Cena as they embark on the first part of their GUE Tech 1 training journey under the watchful eye of instructor Fraser Purdon, hosted by the stellar team at Ocean Frontiers in the Cayman Islands.

This wasn’t your typical tropical dive vacation. This was precision training at depth.

The Plan: Go Deep, Stay Sharp

Our dive profiles were meticulously crafted, each one designed to push our skills and broaden our understanding of technical diving. We dropped into the water before the recreational boats, descending swiftly along the iconic Cayman walls to a maximum depth of 150 feet (45 meters). With helium in our mix and a focus on efficient decompression, we had only one objective: to execute a flawless dive from descent to surfacing.

By the time recreational divers were gearing up for their second dive, we were already decompressing in the shallows, calmly watching them descend as we wrapped up a single, extended mission below.

What Set This Dive Apart

Unlike recreational profiles, this Tech 1 dive required:

Advanced team coordination Precise buoyancy control throughout the depth range Switching gases mid-water Disciplined ascent rates Situational awareness during every phase

We were running a twinset of 104s filled with 21% oxygen and 35% helium, paired with a 50% deco bottle to accelerate our decompression. The training also emphasized controlled problem-solving and efficiency with lights, communication, and gas switches.

Highlights from the Deep:

Descending to 150 ft to explore the dramatic Cayman wall formations Perfecting GUE-standard protocols for gas switches and team communication Efficient decompression stops, often within arm’s reach of vibrant coral heads The surreal crossover with recreational divers mid-deco The incredible clarity, structure, and marine life of Grand Cayman’s dive sites.

Why GUE Tech Training?

Unlike many other dive agencies, GUE sets the bar high with rigorous prerequisites and uncompromising standards. One of the early hurdles in the course is the timed open water swim—a non-negotiable physical requirement that sets the tone for the rest of the training.

In our case, the swim was 500 yards across a bay, from the dock to a dinghy positioned at a measured distance offshore. Pat and I completed the swim without issue, but unfortunately, a third diver in our class could not meet the time requirement and was not permitted to continue the training or dive. It was a stark but important reminder that technical diving demands a high level of physical readiness and mental focus, right from the start.

Another unique emphasis in GUE training is the recommendation (though not a formal requirement) for divers to undergo a PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale) test. A PFO is a small hole in the heart that can increase the risk of decompression illness—especially for technical divers doing deep and repetitive dives. GUE encourages awareness of this condition, advocating for proactive testing and informed decisions, reinforcing their deep commitment to diver safety.

This combination of physical fitness, medical awareness, and skill mastery is part of what sets GUE apart—not just as a training agency, but as a philosophy for safer, more capable exploration of the underwater world.

What’s Next?

Stay tuned, where we take everything we’ve learned and build on it with even more challenging dives, skills, and scenarios.

Second dive took us down to 150ft where the videographer was not certified to do and could not follow us down.
