Exploring Necker Island with Gumption: A Wildly Wonderful Afternoon

An Afternoon in Paradise

On a bright Caribbean afternoon, Liz and I set foot on Necker Island, Sir Richard Branson’s world-famous private retreat in the British Virgin Islands. We were part of Gumption’s Necker Island Nature Walk, a guided eco-tour offered through his Sea It Clear Tours.

We owe a huge thank-you to Sean and Sarah O’Leary of Sail Absolutely for inviting us to join their Necker Island Nature Walk. Their warmth, humor, and knack for finding the best island experiences made the afternoon even more special. Their travel companions were super nice and a whole lot of fun — the kind of people who make a beautiful day even better. Sharing this adventure with good friends turned a memorable tour into one unforgettable experience.

From the moment we arrived, the island came alive — parrots calling from the trees, palms swaying in the breeze, and the sound of waves mixing with laughter. Gumption greeted us with his trademark grin and boundless energy, ready to lead us on an unforgettable afternoon exploring Branson’s island paradise.

Meeting Necker’s Wild Residents

Our first encounter was with one of Necker’s slowest yet most impressive locals — a giant tortoise. This gentle giant lumbered toward us like an ancient guardian of the island, reminding everyone that life’s best pace is often the slow one.

One of Necker’s oldest residents — he’s been roaming the island longer than most visitors have been alive.

From there, things picked up speed — literally — when the ring-tailed lemurs bounded toward us, full of curiosity and charm. One climbed up onto my shoulder like we’d known each other for years. It’s impossible not to smile when a lemur decides you’re part of the troop.

The surprises didn’t stop there. We passed elegant flamingos strutting along a pond, their reflections shimmering pink against the water.

Further along the trail, colorful parrots chattered in the palm trees while peacocks strutted proudly in the sand, showing off their shimmering plumage.

And just when we thought we’d seen it all, a scarlet macaw appeared overhead, perched high in a palm frond like a splash of paint on the green canvas of the island.

A splash of red, yellow, and blue perched perfectly among the palms.

Guided by Passion

Throughout the afternoon, Gumption shared stories about Necker’s wildlife, the island’s recovery after hurricanes, and Sir Richard Branson’s commitment to sustainability. His enthusiasm was electric — part educator, part entertainer, and full-time ambassador for the beauty and balance of the BVI.

Catching some island vibes with Gumption after our Necker Island Nature Walk — his passion for wildlife is as bright as the Caribbean sun.

We even crossed paths with iguanas, kangaroos, and a few mischievous birds that seemed just as curious about us as we were about them.

Views Worth Every Step

As the walk wound down, we climbed up to one of Necker’s panoramic overlooks where the view stretched for miles. The late-afternoon sun poured over the turquoise lagoons, making the ocean sparkle like glass.

That view from the top — where the turquoise sea melts into the horizon.

It was one of those rare moments when the scenery, the company, and the experience all come together in perfect harmony.

Final Thoughts

Our afternoon on Necker Island wasn’t just another stop on our sailing adventure — it was a celebration of nature, conservation, and community. Liz and I left with smiles as bright as the Caribbean sky and a deep appreciation for the people (and animals) who make this island such a treasure.

One last smile before heading back to sea — feeling grateful, sun-kissed, and a little envious of those lemurs who get to call this place home.
