Three Sessions, One Yellow Boxster, and a Whole Lot of Traffic for a Friday

Cool morning temperatures, a nearly empty Eagles Canyon Raceway, and enough telemetry to satisfy the biggest data nerd. The Skipper kept getting quicker all day, even as the Texas heat and traffic worked against me. Sometimes the stopwatch doesn’t tell the whole story.

There’s something special about arriving at Eagles Canyon Raceway before sunrise.

The paddock is quiet. Coffee is still hot. Drivers are unloading trailers and torque wrenches are clicking in the distance. It feels like the calm before controlled chaos.

The Skipper—my Racing Yellow Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0—was ready to play.

So was I.

As usual, I brought enough electronics to make Mission Control jealous. RaceChrono was running on my iPhone, fed by a 25 Hz RaceBox Mini S GPS receiver. OBDLink MX+ was recording engine and vehicle data, while Garmin Catalyst was quietly judging every decision I made behind the wheel and coaching me along the way. If there was a tenth of a second hiding somewhere around Eagles Canyon, one of those gadgets was determined to find it.

Since it was a weekday, I also showed up ready to work between the 20-minute sessions. My MacBook Pro came along with a portable external monitor and, most importantly, my Starlink Mini. Good thing, too. The Wi-Fi at Eagles Canyon has all the speed and reliability of a worn-out set of all-season tires on a wet track. Starlink kept me connected, let me knock out a few client tasks and phone calls between sessions, and made it possible to spend half the day at the track without disappearing from the office. Turns out the only thing faster than my internet connection was the GT3 that kept appearing in my mirrors.

The weather couldn’t have been much better. Session one started around 81 degrees with clear skies, low humidity and a light breeze. It was one of those perfect North Texas summer mornings before the sun reminds you who’s really in charge.

Best of all, hardly anyone was on track.

I had open pavement almost everywhere I looked.

That first session was exactly what I needed. No pressure. No traffic. Just me, the Skipper and eleven turns to get reacquainted after a few weeks away from ECR.

The stopwatch showed a best lap of 2:21.50 with an optimal lap of 2:19.89.

Those numbers were nice, but they weren’t the most encouraging part.

Every flying lap was nearly identical.

Earlier this year I’d occasionally string together one good lap surrounded by laps that were several seconds slower. Today, once the out lap was out of the equation, I was within less than a second from fastest to slowest. The telemetry confirmed what I felt in the driver’s seat. I wasn’t driving hero laps anymore. I was driving repeatable laps.

That’s real progress.

By the second session, temperatures had climbed into the low 80s and more cars had started arriving. It still wasn’t busy by Saturday standards, but I was beginning to catch slower traffic while also keeping an eye on the mirrors.

That’s the funny thing about HPDE.

One minute you’re reeling in a Miata, BRZ or Subaru through the technical section. The next minute a GT3 or GT4 appears in your mirrors looking like it has an appointment you forgot about. Give a clean point-by, let them disappear into the distance, and get back to work.

The lap timer barely changed.

My best lap was a 2:21.75.

The telemetry told a completely different story.

My optimal lap dropped to 2:18.46.

That’s data’s polite way of saying, “The speed is already there. You just haven’t managed to put all the fast sectors together on one lap.”

By the third session, the thermometer was reading around 91 degrees. The paddock was fuller, the track had noticeably more cars, and finding a clean lap became much more difficult. It still wasn’t anywhere near the organized chaos of a typical Saturday HPDE, but there were enough cars on track that traffic became part of almost every lap.

Ironically, my fastest lap of the day happened during that busiest session.

A 2:20.95.

Then came the reality of mixed traffic.

One lap I’d catch a Miata entering a corner and have to wait for a point-by. Another lap I’d lift behind a BRZ. A lap later I’d be waving a GT4 through before settling back into my own rhythm.

Looking only at the lap chart, you’d think I suddenly forgot how to drive. Laps drifted into the mid-2:20s before a couple stretched into the high-2:20s.

The telemetry says otherwise.

Those weren’t bad laps.

They were interrupted laps.

The stopwatch doesn’t care whether you lost five seconds because you missed an apex or because you were courteous to another driver. It simply records the number.

The really interesting part happened after I got home and downloaded everything.

My theoretical pace kept improving all morning.

Session one produced an optimal lap of 2:19.89.

Session two dropped to 2:18.46.

Session three dropped again to 2:18.16.

Think about that for a second.

The air temperature climbed nearly ten degrees.

Traffic steadily increased.

Yet my theoretical pace kept getting quicker.

That’s exactly what I wanted to see.

It tells me I’m still learning. The Skipper and I are becoming more consistent, more predictable and smoother together. The next gains probably won’t come from trying to brake twenty feet later. They’ll come from carrying another mile per hour through the middle of a corner, releasing the brakes a little more smoothly, and getting back to full throttle just a heartbeat sooner.

I’ve spent plenty of time listening to instructors tell me to brake later, carry more speed and track out farther. They’re right, of course. But telemetry has taught me something equally valuable.

Smooth wins.

Consistency wins.

String enough good corners together, and the lap time eventually takes care of itself.

The data also confirmed something I’ve suspected for a while.

I’m no longer searching for speed.

I’m searching for a clean lap.

The Skipper is telling me there’s already a 2:18 hiding in there somewhere. RaceChrono agrees. RaceBox Mini S agrees. Garmin Catalyst certainly agrees. Now I just need one lap where slower traffic, faster traffic and bad timing all decide to take a coffee break at the same time.

Until then, I’ll keep showing up.

Because every time I leave Eagles Canyon, I learn something new.

And that’s worth far more than a number on a stopwatch.
